Best Hikes in San Diego β Trails for Every Level
San Diego's hiking is underrated. Ocean bluffs, desert peaks, coastal sage scrub, and mountain forests β all within the county.
Easy (Under 3 Miles)
- Torrey Pines Guy Fleming Trail β 0.7 miles. Ocean views, wildflowers, and rare Torrey Pine trees. Paved and flat.
- Bayside Trail at Cabrillo β 2.5 miles. Coastal views of downtown, Point Loma, and the harbor.
- Los PeΓ±asquitos Canyon β 2.8 miles to the waterfall. Flat creekside trail, family-friendly.
Moderate (3-6 Miles)
- Cowles Mountain β 3 miles roundtrip. The highest point in San Diego city limits. 360-degree views from the summit. The most popular hike in the county.
- Torrey Pines Razor Point/Beach Trail Loop β 4.5 miles. Cliffs, ocean views, and access to the beach below.
- Iron Mountain β 5.8 miles roundtrip. Steady climb with panoramic views of Poway and the coast.
Challenging (6+ Miles)
- Three Sisters Falls β 4.5 miles but steep and technical. Beautiful waterfall in the Cleveland National Forest. Bring plenty of water.
- Mt. Woodson (Potato Chip Rock) β 7.5 miles roundtrip. The famous photo-op rock plus Lake Poway views.
- Stonewall Peak β 4 miles roundtrip. Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Stone steps to a dramatic summit with 360 views.
Tips
- Start early β parking fills fast at popular trailheads (Torrey Pines, Cowles, Iron Mountain)
- Bring more water than you think β coastal fog does not mean it is cool inland
- Check for trail closures during fire season (typically August-November)
